Thanks to VSLA for the scholarship!

Attending the AASL conference in St. Louis was incredibly rewarding for me. The sessions were rich and inspiring— covering everything from AI and the updates to our library standards, to always-welcomed copyright refreshers, enhancing learner experiences, working with primary sources, digital citizenship, and so much more; I was also introduced to the Pokémon Club which will begin in December in my school thanks to this workshop. There was so much to take in, and each piece added something meaningful to my practice.

But one presenter’s enthusiasm, in particular, stayed with me long after her session ended. Active Learning in the Library with Wendy Garland reminded me of something I knew was missing: bringing the joy and playfulness that first drew me into this profession back into my library classroom. Wendy’s fire, her energy, and her genuine love for sharing her ideas were exactly what I needed to reignite my own spark. She reminded me of the teacher-librarian I used to be—the facilitator who created lively, interactive opportunities for students, and who learned right alongside them.

I would also be remiss not to mention how much I enjoyed watching our fearless leader, Shannon Gile, interview Jason Reynolds onstage while hundreds were in awe. Moments like that— meeting authors, connecting with fellow librarians, and sharing passions— are truly invaluable and always reinvigorate my sense of purpose.

Outside the conference, St. Louis was just as memorable. We walked through the Gateway Arch National Park countless times since the hotel was right beside it. We enjoyed dinner on the 26th floor of the Hilton, a wonderful meal at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant (thanks to VSLA!), and two delicious lunches at Condado Tacos—along with a few other delightful stops. The city did not disappoint.

My advise to anyone- don't let yourself get in the slump I felt myself in. Find a conference to help reignite your energy! Along with VSLA's help, you could also have a renewed sense of purpose.
